Dr Ioannis Ilias obtained his medical credentials in Greece and trained in Endocrinology in Greece and in the US (as a fellow at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD under the tutelage of the world-renowned expert on stress, Professor GP Chrousos). In the US he also trained in Clinical Pharmacology. He is currently a Consultant Endocrinologist at the Elena Venizelou maternity hospital, Athens, Greece, mostly attending a busy clinic for outpatients with endocrine diseases (including diabetes) as well as for inpatients. Dr Ioannis is also active in teaching at both under- and postgraduate levels at the University of Athens Medical School, Greece. He also teaches scientific writing & presentation skills at the University of Ioannina, Greece. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor of clinical pharmacology at the University of Patras Medical School, Greece. His recent research interests in Greece have been honed on - among others - iodine and trace element intake adequacy of pregnant women, hormonal/metabolic disturbances of severely ill patients hospitalized in intensive care units and the study of stress and hormone disturbances in individuals with pulmonary disease, burnout or alcohol addiction. In the National Institutes of Health he studied extensively patients with Cushing's syndrome (characterized by excessive cortisol secretion) and pheochromocytoma (characterized by excessive adrenaline/noradrenaline secretion). Apart from his scientific publications he has also published in the lay press. He is also socially active, collaborating with the Athens-based NGO Klimax.
